Racing Jacket vs Bomber vs Varsity: What's the Difference?

They share a relaxed shape and ribbed cuffs, so they are often confused. Yet the racing jacket, the bomber and the varsity jacket come from three very different worlds.

The racing jacket

Born in the paddock, it is defined by its patches and colour blocks. It is the most expressive of the three: it makes the outfit on its own. Choose it if you want a strong piece with a 90s feel. See its design codes.

The bomber

Originally made for pilots, the bomber is short, plain and functional. It is the most discreet of the three and goes with everything, but it does not have the same personality.

The varsity jacket

Worn by American college athletes, it combines a wool body, leather sleeves and a large letter on the chest. It has a preppy, vintage feel and is usually heavier.

Which one should you choose?

  • You want a statement piece and love motorsport or 90s style: racing jacket.
  • You want a versatile basic: bomber.
  • You like the college look: varsity.
